When watching mechanical wind sensors such as vane models, you'll notice that these always commute slightly even under constant wind conditions. Cup and vane systems always have a certain inertia, which makes it impossible to capture short wind gusts. Compared to this, ultrasonic wind sensors such as the VENTUS-UMB have significant advantages. Also, there are no wear parts or mechanically moving parts which are subject to abrasion. Lufft VENTUS-UMB issues precise real time measured values every quarter of a second (0.25 s). In case this is too fast, the output rate can be slowed down, of course. Moreover, even under the most extreme conditions, it stays ice-free thanks to built-in heating. Disturbances, which can be caused by the sensor fixtures, bars and housing construction, ar ...Read More

Excerpt from “This Week in Petroleum”The Mexican government is in the process of opening its gasoline and diesel markets to outside competition and replacing government-set prices with market-based prices. Last year, Mexico began allowing entities other than the state-owned company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) to import gasoline and diesel and open retail stations. These changes followed previous energy sector reforms that ended Pemex’s upstream monopoly and opened the oil and natural gas sectors to foreign direct investment. Although Mexico is a large crude oil producer, it relies heavily on imports of gasoline from the United States to meet domestic demand. Therefore, the outcome of gasoline market reforms in Mexico may have significant implications for the sale of U.S.-produced gasoline. ...Read More

<source: AFP>Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson said Thursday its earnings plunged in 2016 on weak demand for mobile broadband networks in its developing markets, which were hit by economic slumps. While the earnings report was gloomy reading, including a loss in the fourth quarter, the Ericsson share price rose at the opening of the Stockholm stock market.Investors were buoyed by new chief executive Borje Ekholm's goal of "prioritising profitability over growth."At 0830 GMT, the share price was up 5.68 percent in a market up by 0.75 percent, but had within an hour lost more than half that ground. The higher share price did little however to make up for the 35 percent the stock lost in 2016.Ericsson registered a full-year net profit of 1.9 billion kronor (200 million euros, $21 ...Read More

(Source: Reuters )Oil executives and Middle East producers are concerned that trade tensions between the United States and China risk clouding the outlook for global energy demand growth and a recovery in the price of oil."It is not unique to our country to feel a certain level of anxiety (about tensions). But there is a lot of wisdom on both sides... I hope this anxiety will prove unfounded," Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih told Reuters.Chinese President Xi Jinping offered a vigorous defense of free trade in Davos on Tuesday, underscoring Beijing's desire to play a greater global role as the United States turns inward."The two largest economies need to sort out their differences for the wellbeing of the global community," Falih, who represents the world's largest oil exporter, said ...Read More

(Source: Reuters)Oil ticked lower on Monday, falling for the first time in three sessions as prospects of rising U.S. production weighed on the market.U.S. energy companies last week added the most rigs drilling for new production in almost four years. Drillers added 29 rigs in the week to Jan. 20, bringing the total count up to 551, the most since November 2015, energy services firm Baker Hughes (BHI.N) said on Friday.U.S. oil production has risen more than 6 percent since mid-2016, although it remains 7 percent below a historic high in 2015. It is back to levels of late 2014, when strong U.S. crude output contributed to a crash in oil prices.Brent crude LCOc1, the international benchmark for oil prices, was trading at $55.42 per barrel at 0441 GMT, down 7 cents from its last close. Energy demand in China is slowing. This is causing a major headache for the hydropower sector, which has invested heavily in new projects in recent years. The continued construction of hydropower, as with coal, has led to surplus capacity, tumbling profits and an unbalanced national energy system.Rather than address this problem, the government’s new 13th Five-Year Plan for the energy sector, may actually make it worse. The plan proposes to halt the construction of small- and medium-sized hydropower plants while adding new mega hydropower projects in the country’s western provinces. It hopes to solve overcapacity by transmitting more electricity from the west to the energy-hungry cities of the east. But experts say this will be difficult to achieve in practice.Cutting back on small hydroThe ...Read More

In a circular economy, plastic would be repeatedly recycled instead of ending up as trash or marine pollution.Paul Polman, chief executive officer, Unilever, said in a statement: “Our plastic packaging plays a critical role in mak ...Read More

What’s it worth to society to avoid a power outage? The question nags the microgrid industry. Not knowing makes it hard to monetize microgrids. As it stands now, grid-connected microgrids provide uncompensated services, chief among them the guarantee that electricity will continue to flow when the central grid fails. The ability to avert an outage is not something that’s easy to price; in fact, it is complicated enough that someone could do a whole doctoral thesis on it — and someone is. Andrea Ruótolo, a Fulbright PhD candidate at the University of Delaware’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, is working on a dissertation that explores the cost/benefit analysis of microgrids, taking into account social and environmental metrics. Ruótolo spoke earlier this mo ...Read More
